What are some things to do in Sao Miguel?
One of the most famous spots in the Azores is Sao Miguel’s stunning Sete Cidades lake, set inside the crater of an extinct volcano. A bridge divides the lake in two, with both sides appearing to be different colors depending on the time of day and your vantage point. A trip to Furnas will bring you to one of Sao Miguel’s most interesting and volcanic areas. Here, locals bury food in the hot volcanic ground to retrieve it fully cooked several hours later. You can join in the fun and eat a meal cooked on a volcano at one of Furnas’s local restaurants.
If you love swimming in the ocean but also love splashing around in warm water, head to Ferraria on the island’s west coast. Here, you can swim in the ocean at a cove that is heated by a natural hot spring, wonderfully comfortable if you go at the right time of day.
