Sitting just across the border from the United States, Sault Ste. Marie is a wonderful destination for lovers of the outdoor, and provides easy access to exciting cities like Toronto and Chicago, should visitors want to venture further afield.
Sault Ste. Marie is not a huge city, but packs in a density of high quality cultural attractions for a town of its size. Visit the town museum to find out about the city’s history, or learn about how Canada was linked together at the Bushplane Heritage Centre. Head to the Algoma Art Gallery to see contemporary artworks or see a frontier landmark at the Ermatinger Clergue Historic Site.
But this is a destination that comes into its own beyond the city limits. The placid waters of Lake Ontario make an ideal location for all manner of water sports, from water skiing to power boating, and charter boats can be easily rented out for a spot of fishing. During the summer, visitors can even swim at beaches like Point Des Chenes.
Come winter (between December and March) and Sault Ste. Marie offers arguably more to do. Rent snowmobiles and explore the forests near the city, or head to dedicated skiing resorts like Searchmont Resort. Slap on your snow-shoes to see the hills in their snow-covered glory or try some winter hunting with expert guides.
There are other leisure options to enjoy as well, from high-class golf courses to steam rail journeys through the Agawa Canyon and the delights of the town’s large casino. Rent bikes and head out on the trails, or follow them by foot in a hiking adventure.
For those with rental cars, Toronto is a few hours away – with its exceptional cultural attractions, restaurants and sporting occasions to attend, or you can choose to drive into the northern wilderness to achieve total solitude and relaxation.
Sault Ste. Marie is worth a visit any time of a year. Head to the city between November and March to try out the local slopes and see the landscape in one of its most picturesque phases. Alternatively, the summer months (June to August) are hot and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. Try April for the cheapest accommodation and fine weather for hiking or cycling.
There are many beaches and outdoor attractions within a short cycle or walk of the city centre, and buses travel across the town 19 hours per day. However, a rental car is recommended if visitors want to take advantage of the huge wilderness area around Sault Ste. Marie. Visiting Toronto is also hard without a rental car.
