The airport you will be departing from in Montreal is Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL). This airport is incredibly convenient as it sits around 18 km to the southwest of the center of the city and can be easily accessed from downtown Montreal on the airport's 747 Express bus service that departs from Sainte-Catherine Street Station in downtown Montreal. When you arrive in Barcelona you'll be landing at the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) that has a location about 13 km to the southwest of Barcelona. A trip from the airport to the city center is very easy aboard either the TMB Bus Line 46 that stops at the Playa Espanya in the center of Barcelona or the L9 Sud Metro Line that has service to the Zona Universitaria.
There are two airlines that offer direct service between Montreal and Barcelona that is not only very quick but actually quite affordable. Both Lufthansa Airlines and Air Canada offer direct flights between Montreal-Trudeau International Airport and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. There are also some one and two-stop options that make the trip between these two cities.
Because there are several different airlines that offer one-stop service between Montreal and Barcelona it stands to reason that there will be several different layover points on this route. For example, the one-stop offerings on United Airlines and Air Canada both have a layover at Newark International Airport (EWR). The one-stop flight on Swiss Airlines has a layover at Zurich International Airport (ZRH) and the one-stop offering on Austrian Airlines makes a stop at Vienna International Airport (VIE). The one-stop offerings will generally add about 4-5h to your trip time compared to direct flights, although most of that added time is because of the layovers in the intermediate airports. What you might find surprising is that not only do the direct flights get you there quicker, they are generally the most inexpensive trips you can make on flights to Barcelona from Montreal.
For Canadian citizens that will be making a trip to Barcelona, Spain there is no need to obtain a visa prior to traveling. There is a requirement that Canadian citizens have a valid passport and the passport needs to be valid for at least 90 days beyond their planned date of departure from Spain. It is also of note that since Spain is part of the Schengen area, Canadian citizens may remain for up to 90 days in any of the countries of this area without having to get additional visas or meet additional passport requirements to travel between these countries.
