Slovenia climate

Depending upon your location in Slovenia, you will encounter one of three different climates: continental, Mediterranean and Alpine, all of which have warm summers and harsh winters. The rainy season is in May, June, October and November. January has below freezing temperatures, but July temperatures can reach as high as 23 C.

Getting around Slovenia

Driving is the best way to get around the country. Some visitors fly into Trieste, Italy, rent a car at the airport and drive through the border.  Otherwise the major car hire companies are located in the Ljubljana airport terminal.

Slovenia does have an extensive and reliable train service – Intercity (“IC”) trains – is the fast option while potniski is the slower one. Tickets can be purchased at the station at the time of departure.

If you’re planning on travelling without a car to remote places then buses are the only way to get around instead of a car.

Getting around the small towns by bicycle is another option and Slovenes themselves prefer this form of transport. One word of caution: avoid the highways which can be dangerous.

What is good to know if travelling to Slovenia?

• Head to the Soca River Valley where adrenaline seeks will have plenty to get their hearts pumping. Canyoning is one sport that’s gaining popularity among adventurers. It involves abseiling, climbing, walking and swimming through canyons and gorges.
• Visit the historical, antiwar museum in Kobarid which highlights the events on the Isonzo front between May 1915 and November 1917.
• Although most visitors have Lake Bled on their sightseeing lists, Lake Bohinj is equally as picturesque but with fewer crowds than Bled. While there, visit the museums and historical churches or partake in some active pursuits including kayaking and mountain biking.
• One attraction that really can’t be missed is a visit to the Unesco listed Skocjan Caves in the Kras region of southwest Slovenia. Inside the limestone caves you’ll find underground passages, 200 metre-deep caves and cascading waterfalls.
• Travel back to medieval times and take a trip to Ljubljana Castle dating back to the 16th-century. For a spectacular view of the city climb up the 95 iron steps to the top of Pentagonal Tower and observe the city and country-side from 360 degrees.
