Cheap Flights to Kavala

Kavala overview

When is the best time to fly to Kavala?

Kavala is a fantastic summer holiday destination, thanks to its humid climate and fabulous blue flag beaches. A flight to Kavala is best taken in the summer season, between June and August, when temperatures reach an average of about 26°C, however it’s not uncommon for them to soar to a hot 29°C. Humidity can be very high at this time of year, so if you prefer to spend your time away from the beach, consider holidaying in Kavala in June or September, when temperatures are slightly cooler but days are still warm and sunny. Temperatures during these months can still reach the mid-teens to low 20’s making it the perfect time to visit for a holiday packed with sightseeing and wandering around the picturesque town.

For those travellers on a budget who don’t mind the cooler temperatures, try searching for holidays outside of the peak summer months, from October through April, to grab yourself cheap flights to Kavala along with lower rates on accommodation.

Kavala overview

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Symvolo, the city of Kavala in northern Greece is a picturesque port with an incredible history. Dating as far back as the 7th Century BC, Kavala was once called Neapolis, a colony founded by the Thassians. Modern Kavala offers a stunning array of historic sites and museums to explore, with treasures that date back to the city's Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The Old Town of Kavala is best explored on foot and there is even a tourist train that runs from the central square. Amongst the main historical sites, you will find Kavala Castle located on a hill, which dates back to 1425. The castle offers stunning views over the city. Another major reason tourists take flights to Kavala is to see one of the city’s most famous  landmarks, the Kamares, a Roman aqueduct near Nikotsara Square that dates back to the 16th Century. In the Old Town square, you can visit the House of Muhammad Ali, the founder of the last Egyptian dynasty. Other noteworthy architectural features include the Town Hall, a Hungarian building built around 1895, the Tokos Mansion, which dates back to 1879, and The Imaret, an example of Islamic architecture from the late Ottoman period. If you want to see some of the antiquities from ancient Kavala, take a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Kavala, which is considered to be one of the most important in Greece.

Getting around Kavala

Although the Old Town is best explored on foot, you will have to hire a car to tour the surrounding area. Taxis in Kavala are fairly cheap and will take you anywhere in the city. There is also a public bus service that can take you around the city area. If you want to travel further afield, you can take an intercity bus from the bus station on Filikis Eteria Str in the city centre to visit other cities around Greece, such as Thessaloniki and Athens. There is no train station in Kavala, so intercity buses provide the best option for travelling to nearby cities. Kavala is also a major port, with regular ferry crossings to various Greek islands, including Limnos and Chios.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Your flight to Kavala International Airport (KVA) "Alexander the Great" will locate you around 19 miles (30 km) east of Kavala in Nestos. The airport is difficult to reach by public transport, but you can hire a local taxi or rent your own car from one of the major car hire companies.
