Most visitors book flights to North Carolina to visit the state where flying first took off. The Wright Brothers powered the first flight in 1903 at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk. Today, visitors can pay homage to the first man-powered flight at the Wright Memorial at Kitty Hawk.

North Carolina’s climate on the southern coast can be in the mid-teens in January, with summer temperatures cooled to the low 20s by ocean breezes. The Piedmont gets very hot and humid with temperatures in the 30s. Peak hurricane season is from August all the way to October. Spring and autumn are great times to visit.
Peak Season:
Peak season along North Carolina’s coast is in summer, and Charlotte is busy with festivals and sporting events. Most state and local fairs are held in August and September.
October is peak season in the mountains, and the monarch butterfly annual migration draws crowds around Wagon Road Gap. Fishing at Cape Lookout is best done in Autumn.
Off Season:
Off peak season in the Triangle is when the schools are out in summer session.
Along the coast it gets quiet during spring, autumn, and early winter when temperatures are between ten and 15 degrees Celsius. It can get quite cold in January and February and many businesses are closed.

Catching an internal flight is a quick and cheap way to get around the state. Trains serve the major inland cities, and there is frequent bus service in the Piedmont (the central part of the state). Ferries along the coast connect some of the coastal town.
The shoreline and mountains in the west are best explored by car, especially the Blue Ridge Parkway through the mountains. The highways tend to be well maintained and some have rest areas with picnic and cooking facilities.
North Carolina’s cities and towns including the Charlotte Uptown area and the downtown areas of the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) are best explored on foot. The towns also have convenient and inexpensive public transportation.
