There is only one airport in Rwanda that accepts international flights and that is Kigali International Airport—the airport code for which is KGL. If you are hoping to secure one of the cheap flights to Rwanda that originates from Canada, then you will likely depart from one of two key transportation hubs: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) or Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL). From Toronto, the flights to Rwanda can take anywhere from roughly about 27h 40min to around 53h 45min. Alternatively, the flights that leave from Montréal bound for the East African country can be as quick as about 17h 35min or as long as roughly 49h 40min. Flight duration depends on the number of layovers as well as the locations of them.
Unfortunately, nonstop flights from Canada to Rwanda are not currently available. Although, there are some airports that provide options that include just one layover. For instance, one-stop flights leave from Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) and may land in a European city like Amsterdam or Brussels before completing the final leg of the journey to Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport. Additional one-stop flights leave from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and from Vancouver International Airport (YVR); they typically stop in cities like Addis Ababa or Istanbul. Two stop options are available from airports like Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB). These options will usually stop at another Canadian airport, then Istanbul prior to completing the journey to Rwanda.
Rwanda, like many East African countries, is known for its rugged terrain and the access that it’s remoteness provides to the stunning, unhabituated and habituated wildlife throughout the country. For this reason, the best methods of transportation in the country are typically 4x4s. To get from the capital city of Kigali to Volcanoes National Park to the northwest, travelers can hire a 4x4 or can get a personal vehicle rental—though the 4x4 is preferable. The trip takes between roughly 2h and 3h to complete. These two options are also available if you’re trying to get from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest in the southwest. This route can take about 5h to 6h.
One of the most exciting regions in the world to visit is East Africa. If you have managed to secure one of the available Rwanda flight deals, then you’ll want to be sure that you invest time in mapping out your journey upon arrival so that you can eke out the most for your visit. Head over to Lake Kivu, which offers stunning vistas, or pop on over to Lake Ihema—a spot that has an array of fascinating birds that will excite any ornithologist. Along with Uganda, Rwanda is one of the few places on earth where you can secure a pass to traverse the jungle and peek-in on gorillas in their natural, wild habitat. Guided treks are available from a range of places, like Volcanoes National Park.
In order to visit Rwanda, all Canadian citizens must get a visa; however, the visa can be obtained upon landing at Kigali International Airport. Typically, these cost about C$ 125. A passport is also required and it will need to be valid for at least another six months after your departure from the country.
