When is the best time to fly to Latrobe?

The Laurel Highlands are beautiful all year round, but the many outdoor activities available will be at their best between April and October, before the snows come. There are some skiing slopes and trails, however, so winter sports are also an option. Catch an NFL match between September and January - or play golf almost all year round. Located in the hills of western Pennsylvania, Latrobe is a welcoming small town which provides access to some stunning scenery, and has a lively cultural life of its own.

One of the town's favourite attractions is the site of the original Rolling Rock Brewery. See where one of America's favourite beers was created and take the fascinating brewery tour before sampling some of the town's many micro-brews.

Another great attraction is golf. Home of world-famous player Arnold Palmer, the town of Latrobe boasts a course that the great man designed, and is one of the finest courses in the United States.

Other than golf, Latrobe is ideal for lovers of the great outdoors. Head into the Laurel Highlands to try horse riding, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and hunting. Families will also adore the excitement on offer at Idlewild and Soakzone - one of the region's best water parks.

With a large student population, Latrobe boasts some excellent theatres and galleries.  Visit the Mountain Playhouse or Palace Theatre to see dance, plays or musical events, or check out the artistic creations of the area at the Latrobe Art Centre. Whatever your passion, the town has a something to offer.

There are even some architectural marvels to see - with a couple of elegant homes that were designed by the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and you can take a car journey along one of America's oldest roads via the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor.

If the small town atmosphere is not exciting enough, visitors can easily reach Pittsburgh - where they can find a huge array of shops and museums, or catch an NFL match. Or, for those seeking even more seclusion, camping sites in the Allegheny Mountains can be easily reached by rental car.

Getting around Latrobe

For most people, renting a car will be essential - as it makes accessing local cities and attractions much easier. However, for groups of travellers, specialist travel firms provide minibuses in the Latrobe area, which may be ideal for golfing holidays. Renting a bike is a great way to see the town, and there are plenty of easy to follow rural paths as well.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Arnold Palmer Regional Airport (LBE) is conveniently located for those seeking to get into the centre of Latrobe. All of the major car rental firms are represented at the airport, and renting a car is recommended to provide access to golf courses, natural sights and Pittsburgh. However, taxis and shuttle buses will also be available if needed.
