they demanded insurance coverage that cost more than the daily rate of the car then they found a dent in the bumper (that was probably there prior to rental) and demanded payments for $256 because the insurance they sold us had a $1500 deductible get your insurance up front from an independent vendor for $10 a day instead of $30 a day and don't use Alamo

Reps at both checkout and checkin were good

Car was very old, beaten up and underpowered. REALLY wasn't clear on insurance and it ended up costing A LOT more than expected. I'm not sure why I bought 3rd party insurance, it didn't really save me anything.

Car cost 3.5 times my confirmed rate. They tried to charge me 5.5 and I said that's enough. Most of money extra was insurance and additional add ons such as license charge. Never had this experience before. Very low class!

Great car for price and season

An employee loaded our luggage into another customers car that left with our stuff. It was really tough on us because we were traveling with infant and made our first day a looooooong nightmare. They did help in tracking down our luggage, but it was up to us to make arrangement to to meet up with that customer and go pick up our luggage.

The people were friendly and (thankfully) spoke English. The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.

I opted out of insurance when I booked it, and that was probably a mistake. I think it was a lot cheaper if I had booked it online, and without this I had to buy there and it was almost twice the price of the car. That SUCKED.

I have rented a car previously in Costa Rica. You have to understand that the price you are going to pay will be more them what you see here. They have a national insurance that is required no matter whether you have coverage on your credit card or your personal insurance. It typically adds $12-$13 additional per day. They also have other insurances that are OPTIONAL. You have to be careful because many unscrupulous rental agencies will try to tack these on additionally. If your credit card or insurance will cover you for renting the car then you need to bring documentation of such and show them to the rental agency. At National, as soon as I showed them this documentation I was able to decline the other VERY EXPENSIVE optional coverages. At some other agencies, this was not quite as easy and I did end up having to pay for some of the additional coverages despite the documentation. Make sure you do your research before you rent a car in Costa Rica. It definitely is different than renting it in the States.

Drop off, paid for full coverage had 2 flats and tried to make me admit to an accident/mark on the car. All I wanted was an apology for all the bald tires and the wanted me to fill out paperwork. I paid for full-all coverage and I should not have had as many issues as I did for that much money

The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.

We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.

National wouldn't honor the insurance I was encouraged to purchase when I reserved the car online. Total waste of $70!! After loading the car we found out the air conditioner didn't work, had to go though whole check out process again for another car.

They show a picture of a Toyota RAV4 as the model on offer, which is very powerful, but changed their fleet to weakling Suzuki's without advertising it.

Car was clean and full of gas

We rented a Diahatsu Terios 4x4 because we would be taking many very hilly, dirt roads. This car has a small engine and barely made it up many hills. We had to put it in 1st gear all the way up. It was truly a gutless wonder and would recommend renting a 4x4 with a larger engine.

Beware - The counter reps will try to sell you the prepaid petrol, stating it is cheaper at Budget than at petrol stations. This is not true. Also decline the damage insurance even if they claim it is 'mandatory'. They're running a scam at this location. The San Jose location clearly advertises that you can decline the insurance if your credit card covers rental insurance - just make sure to have a document from your credit card company (all it takes is a quick phone call) clearly stating that your rental will be covered in Costa Rica.

the insurance should be listed when you order the car. or at least provide an estimate. its unfair to blindside the consumer and charge them double. ridiculous as a matter of fact. and if only manual transmissions are available, that should be made clear also. i was stuck driving the entire trip because my girlfriend has never driven manual transmission

I initially reserved a full size and regular suv. In the picture for full size it showed what appeared to be a chevy suburban and the regular showed what appeared to be a ford edge. When I arrived at the rental place the full size was a rav4 and the regular was a very small suv. I find this to be false advertising and was very upset. Other than this service was very good. With no adress in costa rica the car rental employees went above and beyond to help us get where we needed to go

My prepaid insurance through your website was not honored. I had to spend $250 extra just on the insurance. The car was 5 years old and beat up. It had 110000 kilometers on the odometer. I reserved automatic and I was offered a manual transmission for the same money. Major disappointment. Also they requested $1,000.00 deposit!!! That’s way far from the industry standard.

I reserved an automatic SUV a week in advance. When I got there they told me they only have manual pickup tucks and told me I was SOL, had no other options and my only choice was take that at the same rate or cancel my reservation. We cancelled and went to Enterprise. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all cost!

Friendly staff, quick process, and decent price. Made a 10-day reservation for an SUV for about $325, and had to pay the local insurance for the vehicle. In the grand scheme of the cost and everything that went with it, it was totally worth it.

The Avis in Liberia sent us off the lot with an old, dilapidated tire that came apart in pieces as we were driving. The office did not pick up the phone or respond to us when we called in with the problem, but thankfully we were able to get in touch with the insurance provider who sent someone to change the tire. He was shocked at how old and rundown the tire was compared to the three others on the vehicle and told us we were very lucky it didn’t cause an accident. When I returned to Liberia and was finally able to connect to the Avis service people in person, they told me it was my fault for driving the car off the lot and charged me $280 for the tire. I have a report filed to try and resolve this, but this was one of the worst car rentals AND customer experiences I have ever had.

Price ended up being 3x what was quoted on your website. Had to pay over $40 a day for insurance. $12.50 a day for a phone that did not work. Also charged $100 for a 1/4 tank of gas. The staff was rude on pickup and drop off. I will never use Avis again. Very disappointed.

I looked up the insurance policies prior to arriving in Costa Rica after receiving e-mails from AVIS stating that there are optional insurances and upgrades available. I'm covered with all the requirements of Costa Rica through my insurance, plus have additional coverage with my credit card and above and beyond that we have an umbrella insurance policy that covers far beyond any liability waiver that they provide. At the counter they required me to purchase their insurance for $38.99 a day!! I showed them my proof of insurance and then they told me they needed a personal letter from my insurance company to them (not AVIS, but to their office in Liberia). While in line there were two other couples contacting their insurance companies struggling to get a letter faxed to their office. Apparently a digital copy or e-mail wouldn't work either. It is off-airport and once they have you there they make it very inconvenient to leave you there without a car. Additionally they placed a $2,000 hold on my credit card (usually made for those who decline insurance) so that shouldn't have been necessary since I was made to purchase theirs. I later found out that the agents behind the counter are incentivized by commission to sell the insurance and upgrades. The car was suppose to be given to me full - it was 1/2 tank, the front tires were bald, I had to stop and put air in the rear tire. For this reason I will never rent with AVIS again.

Economy Rent-a-Car posts a low price on services like Kayak/Priceline- but then when you get to the pickup spot in Costa Rica you learn that mandatory insurance will cost you much more than the cost of the car. At that point you have little choice but to either get no car, or pay the overage, as the booking is non-refundable. It feels upsetting and dishonest. Please stop recommending Economy in Costa Rica.

Staff was friendly

Price is incredibly misleading. What I reserved was a week long rental for a SUV. When we finally got to the rental counter, they surprised us with government mandated insurance, which caused the price to skyrocket. By the end of it, the cheapest option we had, which was “insurance” that still has us liable for all damages and expenses to the sum of $500+ for a week. Had I known the total price before booking, I wouldn’t have even bothered. Look elsewhere for a car rental.
