There are seemingly endless things to see and do in Austin, but if you only have a few days, we’re sharing the absolute best sights and activities to add to your bucket list when you’re visiting the capital of Texas.

Barton Springs Pool

Located in Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool is spring fed natural swimming pool that stays at a constant 22 degrees Celsius – perfect for cooling off on a hot day. The pool measures three acres in size and taking a dip there makes for a great way to spend a sunny afternoon in Austin.

Mexican food

Don’t leave Austin without having a meal (or three) at a Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurant. The city is full of places to get your taco and burrito fix. Start with Güero’s Taco Bar, Fonda San Miguel, and La Palapa, which are known to be a few of the best.

Hike Mount Bonnell

If you’re feeling active and want to get moving, hike up Mount Bonnell, one of the highest points in the city standing at roughly 239 meters, and one of the most popular tourist attraction in Austin. There is a short trail leading to the top where you can enjoy great views over Lake Austin and the city below. Don’t forget your camera.

Congress Avenue bats

From April to October, Austin’s Congress Bridge is home to what’s known to be the largest urban bat population in North America (about 1.5 million to be exact). At dusk every night the bats leave the bridge in droves to find food, creating a unique and memorable experience.

BBQ

Texas is a state known for its barbecue and you don’t want to miss out on sampling some of the best in Austin. One of the most famous spots is Franklin Barbecue (get ready for a line-up), but you can also try Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew, Iron Works BBQ, and Ruby’s BBQ.

South Congress Avenue

One cool and eclectic check out during your visit to Austin is South Congress Avenue. The strip is home to interesting shops, restaurants, antique stores, clothing boutiques, galleries and music venues. On the first Thursday of every month stores on the street stay open until 10 p.m. and some offer sales and give out free drinks to patrons.

Lady Bird Lake

In downtown Austin you’ll find Lady Bird Lake, named after Lady Bird Johnson, former First Lady of the United States. The 16 kilometers of trails bordering the lake make it an ideal spot for walking, jogging, hiking and biking. You can also kayak and canoe on the lake, creating a haven for anyone who wants to get active in the fresh air without leaving the city.

Live music

Austin is known as the “live music capital of the world” so catching a band play is a must while you’re here. Some of the best places to see live music in the city include Saxon Pub, Victory Café, Stubbs (also a great place to get BBQ), Mohawk and the Elephant Room.

6th Street

The seven blocks of 6th Street between Congress and IH 35 are known as the entertainment hub of Austin. This is where you come for live music as well as cafes, bars, art galleries and restaurants, many of which are housed in historical buildings.

Check out a local brewery

Austin is ranked number 11 on America’s best beer cities and it continues to impress beer enthusiasts each year. While you’re visiting, make sure to take part in a brewery tour. A few to look into include 512 Brewery, Jester King Brewery, and Austin BeerWorks.
