The Mayans called Cozumel the Island of the Swallows. Today, it’s known as one of the best dive sites in the world. Divers take cheap flights to Cozumel to practise their sport amid the walls, reefs and abundant of sea life of these protected waters.

Cozumel lies just 20km off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo. On the west coast, between the north and south hotel zones, is San Miguel. This pretty city with a small-town feel is home to most of Cozumel’s population. The eastern side of the island is largely uninhabited. The coastline is wild, isolated and perfect for get-away-from-it-all vacationers. It is dotted with just a few restaurant/beach bars.

What is good to know if travelling to Cozumel?

• Pack an extra suitcase on your cheap flights to Cozumel. In San Miguel, the most concentrated shopping area is centred around the Plaza del Sol, the zócalo, and runs along the waterfront and for several blocks back into the town. Yucatecan hammocks, embroidered and lace clothing, leather goods, table linen, silver jewellery, decorative metalwork, ceramics and carved wood are all good buys.
• Some of the most popular dive spots are Punta Tunich, Paraiso, Tormentos, Chankanaab, Maracaibo, Punta Sur, Colombia and Paso del Cedral.
• Dzul Ha and Corona Beach Club offer free snorkelling, but divers are expected to purchase drinks and food while there. Get there early or late afternoon (11am-3.30pm) to beat the crowds.
• San Gervasio is a site dedicated to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of midwifery, fertility, medicine and weaving. Its beautiful setting, largely unrestored buildings and peaceful atmosphere makes it a welcome retreat.
• If new to diving, be careful of the currents. The continental shelf is on the west side of the island. It drops dramatically to around 2,000 metres.
