Online check-in

Web check-in opens 48 hours before your scheduled departure time for most flights on Etihad, closing 24 hours before departure. You can check in online here. Once you’re checked in, print your boarding pass or get a mobile boarding pass sent to your phone. Before you go, be sure to check out Cheapflights.ca’s guide to 10 things to do before your flight.

Priority boarding

Frequent fliers registered as a Gold or Platinum member are entitled to priority boarding. This is available across all partnering airlines as well.

Flying with children

A reduced child fare may be purchased for children aged between 2 and 12. An adult fare applies for the entire journey for those children who turn 12 en-route. You can use the online check-in if you are travelling with an infant but boarding passes can only be obtained from staff members at the check-in desks. The airline also offers a professionally trained flying nanny service for families with small children which you may inquire about when making your booking. A family room is available for Premium Class guests at the airport as well.

Seating for infants and children

You can bring your own infant car seat on board an Etihad flight but to do so, you will need to reserve a seat on the flight for your child at the applicable fare ahead of time.
Infant car seats carried on board a flight need to be approved for aircraft and must fit onto the cabin seat. Children aged under 2 years can sit on your lap, and those aged between 6 months and 36 months may sit on a car-type seat brought into the cabin Baby baskets are available on some long-range flights for babies less than 10 months old and weighing less than 2 lbs. The baby-basket service is free but a seat reservation on a bulkhead seat is required.

Unaccompanied children

Chaperone services are offered for children who are:

  • travelling alone aged between 5 and 11 years (not yet 12)
  • between 12 and 16 years where the parent has requested the service

Children aged 12 and over do not require a chaperone service, but if requested, a fee of around $125 for international flights is applicable for all unaccompanied children under 12. You can book your child’s flight here. After booking the flight online, you will be provided with a booking reference. You will need this reference to complete the Unaccompanied Minor Form. We also have a helpful guide for kids flying solo.

Flying while pregnant

Expectant mothers may fly up until 28 weeks without a medical certificate. From week 29 to 36 a medical certificate is required. Air travel is no longer permitted after the 37th week of pregnancy. This is only for single pregnancies, however. For multiple pregnancies, pregnant women may not travel after the 33rd week of their pregnancy. Here’s our guide to flying while pregnant.

Group bookings

You may inquire into group bookings if you plan to travel as a party of 10 or more people. This excludes infants. Services offered include a meet and assist at the airport for a smooth check-in, seating together as a group and the preparation of special meals to meet dietary or religious requirements. More information, including contacts details, can be found here.

Disabled access & medical equipment

Onboard wheelchairs are available on Etihad aircraft but you will need to alert the airline to your need for an on-board wheelchair at least 48 hours ahead of departure. If you plan to bring your own wheelchair, it may be accepted as baggage without charge and in addition to the free baggage allowance provided the height of the wheelchair does not exceed 47 inches. Further to this, Etihad also provides the following travel companion services:

  • assistance when moving to and from the lavatory
  • assistance in stowing and retrieving carry-on items, mobility aids, and other assistive devices
  • effective communication with hearing impaired passengers

We also have guides on flying with disabilities and travelling with medication.

Pets & service animals

Guide dogs are only allowed in the cabin on flights between the U.S. and Abu Dhabi. Falcons are permitted in the main cabin as long if all the required documents have been obtained. All other pets must travel as manifest cargo. These animals must be cleared at the cargo terminal upon arrival where they will be examined by a local veterinarian. Here you will be asked to show the relevant import and health certificates. Be sure to check out our handy checklist before you fly with your pet.guide to flying with your furry friends.

What are Etihad’s baggage allowance limits and fees?

Carry-on size
Checked luggage size
Extra and overweight baggage charges
Musical and sport equipment

Carry-on baggage allowance

The number of carry-on baggage items you are permitted to carry on board is determined by your booked service class:

  • Economy Class: 1 piece x 15.43 lbs.
  • Business and First Class: 2 pieces up to 26.45 lbs. total

Checked baggage allowance

The checked baggage fee depends on your destination. A full list of allowances can be found here.

Extra and overweight baggage charges

Your carry-on baggage may not exceed the dimensions of 45.27 inches. Carry-on baggage larger or heavier than these limitations must be checked in when boarding and you will be charged to transport them if your free baggage allowance is exceeded. Infants are also entitled to a bag weighing no more than 11 lbs.

Musical and sport equipment

You can carry sports equipment with us as part of your free or purchased checked baggage, as long if it is packed appropriately and meets the size and weight restrictions. Items that exceed the standard dimensions will need to be carried as cargo. You can carry one set of golf equipment, weighing a maximum of 33 lbs., for free as checked baggage. The same weight limit applies for scuba diving equipment. You can also carry ski equipment as part of your normal checked baggage allowance. This includes 1 pair of skis, 1 pair of ski poles and 1 pair of ski boots, or 1 snowboard and 1 pair of boots.
