If you’ve never been to Halifax, you’re in for a treat if you go. Along with a scenic harbour, an abundance of parks and great places to eat, drink, and shop, Halifax is full of history and culture. Take a fun and exciting journey back in time to experience the city’s great past.

Visit the Halifax Public Gardens

In the heart of downtown Halifax is where you’ll find the 16-acre Halifax Public Gardens. The Victorian-era gardens opened in 1867 and wandering through them can feel a bit like stepping back in time. When  you walk through the ornate wrought iron entrance you’ll find fountains, statues, 140 species of trees, and of course, many beautiful flower beds.

Stop by Alexander Keith’s Brewery

Alexander Keith’s Brewery is one of the oldest breweries in Canada. Tours here take you back to 1863 as guides in period costume take you through the brew house and tap room. The lively one hour tour brings the past to life and includes samples.

Go see Citadel Hill

Halifax’s Citadel Hill is a National Historic Site of Canada and a former military fortification. Exploring the site is like taking a peek into Halifax’s history and an interesting way to spend an afternoon while visiting the city. You can tour the grounds, either on your own or with a guide, visit the Citadel’s Army Museum, and get a sense for what life may have been like for the soldiers stationed there.

Explore the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the oldest and largest maritime museum in Canada. The museum focuses on Nova Scotia’s rich maritime history and you’ll find exhibits here that cover everything from boat building and steam ships, to sailing, military vessels and Halifax’s role in the Titanic. There are permanent exhibits here that showcase more than 24,000 artifacts in the museum’s collection, as well as temporary exhibits.

Shop the Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market

The Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market is the longest continuously running market in North America and well worth a visit. Created in 1750, the market sold meat, produce and livestock, and moved locations several times. Today, you can browse more than 250 vendors selling everything from produce, fresh fish and baked goods, to jewellery, art, flowers and hand-crafted soaps. It’s a great spot to pick up a souvenir or grab a bite to eat.

Experience the food with a walking tour

What better way to learn about a city’s history than through its cuisine. Halifax is home to a diverse culinary scene – taste what’s on offer with a walking tour that encompasses some of the city’s best and most-loved cuisine. Local Tasting Tours offers many food-centric tours, including downtown Halifax, evening tours and open kitchen tours where you might get to sample anything from artisan wood fired pizza to handmade chocolate.
