While you might go to Pisa for what the area is known for (that precariously leaning tower), there’s more to this Tuscan city than its famous piece of architecture gone wrong. Of course, if you’re going to be in Pisa you’ll want to check out the iconic landmark that made it famous, but if you do, book in advance since it’s such a busy attraction and only 40 people are allowed in at once for only a 30 minute visit.

In addition to the tower, there are many other worthwhile sights in Pisa. The area where you’ll find the tower is known as the Piazza del Duomo, a World Heritage Site that holds four important masterpieces of medieval architecture. This group of four is comprised of the tower, the cathedral, the baptistery and the cemetery, making for an impressive and photogenic grouping.

Like many cities Pisa has a hop-on/hop-off bus tour you can take, which is a good way to see the city and learn while you sight-see. But Pisa is so compact, you really can see a lot on foot. Away from the Piazza del Duomo you can find other interesting things to see and do, including museums, gothic churches, lively bars and cafes in the town centre, and some fantastic scenery.
