If you’ve already been to Costa Rica and Panama, or you’re interested in a warm destination that also offers a variety of things to see and do, look no further than the small Central American country of Belize.

Ideal for snorkellers and divers, Belize is home to the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, and the second longest in the world. Here you have the opportunity to spot more than 100 types of coral and 500 species of fish (we suggest an underwater camera). Some of the best snorkelling can be had off of Tobacco Caye, a small island offering rustic accommodations and amazing snorkelling and diving. Divers can have the unforgettable experience at Belize’s world renowned Great Blue Hole.

Belize is also home to many ancient Maya temples worth exploring. Some of these sites include Carocol, Altun Ha and Lamanai. You can walk around on your own, or hire a guide to learn more about what you’re seeing. If you feel like being more active, there is plenty of hiking to be done in Belize (try a trail at Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve), as well as canoeing and kayaking. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a tour to visit Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave where you’ll get to twist, climb and sometimes swim your way through an ancient cave filled with Mayan artifacts (truly a must-do in Belize).

There are beaches to check out, friendly people to meet and good food to be had in Belize, plus it’s small, easy to get around and the official language is English, which makes for easy travel.

Here are some photos that show off the best Belize has to offer.
