The tiny Dutch island of Curacao is a unique alternative to some of the more common Caribbean islands. It was recently selected by Frommers as one of the 10 best snorkelling spots in the Caribbean and was voted favourite Caribbean destination for both 2012 and 2013 in the About.com reader’s choice awards.

You can expect friendly people, consistently warm, sunny weather, vibrant architecture (especially in the colourful capital of Willemstad), a Caribbean city with some European flavour thanks to the Dutch influence, 35 beaches and more than 60 diving and snorkelling spots. Charming Willemstad also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of only six in the entire Caribbean.

Whether you’ve been, and need some inspiration to go back, or you’re curious to see just what this lively, attraction-packed island has to offer, here are some photos that prove what a beautiful place Curacao is.
