Vacation rentals can be a great alternative to hotel rooms. They are often more affordable, larger and come with a kitchen. If you’re planning on opting for a vacation rental on your next trip, there are a few simple ways to save while doing so.

Go on the off-season

Going anywhere in the off-season will mean savings. The less in demand something is, the cheaper it’s going be, versus going somewhere when everyone else is going, which creates competition and therefore, higher prices. If you have some flexibility when it comes to travel, research when the low season is for your destination of choice and aim to book a rental for within that time frame.

Ask around

There are many vacation rental companies to choose from (VRBO.com and Homeaway.com for example), but it never hurts to ask around among friends and colleagues. You never know who might be able to get you a good deal through someone they know.

Look at last-minute deals

If you don’t have specific travel dates but just know you want to go somewhere, look into last minute deals, or inquire about lowering the cost of a vacation rental if you plan to book and go within a short span of time. People who are renting out accommodations simply want them filled, so if you can nab a spot at the last minute, you will likely be able to do so at a lower cost.

Rent directly through owners

Rather than going through a company that rents out properties, rent directly from a homeowner. You will likely pay more if you go through an agency because you’re not only paying the cost of the rental, but a fee to the middleman. The sites mentioned above, in addition to Airbnb.com and Roomarama.com are good places to start.

Utilize the kitchen

Save money on food whole you’re away by making use of the kitchen in your vacation rental (assuming you’ve booked a space that has kitchen facilities). Going out to eat can be fun, but if you eat in for at least a few meals, you’ll be saving you and your family a lot of money.

Try for a longer stay

Often, the longer you stay, the less you’ll be paying per night. If you can, think about booking for longer in order to get more bang for your buck. Before you book, ask about whether there are any deals to be had on a stay longer than one week.
