Alitalia Check-in

Web check-in is available on select routes from 20 hours up to 60 minutes before scheduled departure. Check in at the airport at least two hours before the plane is scheduled to take off.

Alitalia baggage allowance

Hand luggage: One piece of hand luggage, 5kg in weight, with dimensions (including handles, side pockets and wheels) of 55cm x 25cm x 35cm.

Checked: Economy class passengers are allowed to bring two suitcases, up to 23kg each, the maximum measurement per suitcase 158cm.

Excess: From North America, excess baggage rates are $150 US (€150 for flights to North America) per piece. If the bag is bigger than 158cm (to a maximum of 203cm), the fee is $150 (or €150 for flights to Canada). If the piece of baggage is heavier than 23kg (up to 32kg), the fee is $50 (or €50 for flights to Canada).

Pre-arranged seating

At the time of reservation, you have the option of choosing a specific seat on the aircraft and the airline will try to honour your requests; but, if the aircraft to be used for a certain flight is replaced or modified, you will not be guaranteed the specific assignment of any seat, even if it has already been confirmed.

Passenger change details

Refunds depend on the fare applied when you bought the ticket. To request a refund, passengers are advised to contact their local Alitalia office.

Child fares

Children under 12 are entitled to several fare discounts, depending on the flight. Check with the reservations centre when booking. Infants under the age of two may not occupy a seat.

Senior fares

Some senior discounts may be available. Check with the airline.

Pets

You can travel with pets, but you must request the special service at your local Alitalia office to make sure you have all the necessary documents. If accepted as checked baggage, animals, with their container and food, will not be included in the free baggage allowance but will be considered excess baggage for which the you may have to pay a fee. Guide dogs will be carried free of charge in addition to the free baggage allowance.

Carrying musical instruments

You can carry any musical instrument that is not longer than 100cm as checked baggage. Larger instruments, such as a cello, must be bought a seat. If this is the case, you must have the instrument placed in the window seat with you sitting in the seat next to it. Other instruments longer than 100cm are treated as cargo.

In-flight service

For medium-haul flights over three hours and all long-haul flights complimentary meal service is available. Special religious or dietary meals are available upon request.

Air miles

The airline's frequent flyer program is named "MilleMiglia" (thousand miles), and is part of the SkyTeam alliance program, allowing passengers to collect miles and redeem them for free tickets across the whole alliance.

Airline overview

Alitalia is Italy's former flag carrier. The airline that was established  in 1947, and which, among other things, ferries the Pope around, is now a privately owned airline. It is integrated with Air One and 25 percent of it is owned by Air France/KLM. Its headquarters are in Rome, and it has a hub at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. The airline serves 23 destinations in Italy and 47 destinations outside of the country.
