An island of two halves, St Maarten offers an unusual mix of French and Dutch influence in a Caribbean setting. The two European powers have shared this island for centuries with the French occupying the northern half and the Dutch settled in the south.
Also known as St Martin, the island features something for everyone with the French portion to the north best known for its beautiful beaches, making it an ideal destination for sun bathers, swimmers as well as divers. Meanwhile the Dutch side is more of an urban destination with many shops and restaurants on offer. A lively bar scene is also set here so do not necessarily feel inclined to retire to your hotel at sundown.
Cheap flights to St Maarten arrive on the Dutch side of the island where many duty-free shops offering discounted goods attempt to entice visitors arriving by air or by sea via cruise ships that make regular stops here. Keep in mind that it is not necessary to choose between the two sides of St Maarten with many a visitor combining the attractions of each into a single visit.
Like many of its Caribbean neighbours, St Maarten is sunny and warm all year long. Average temperatures range from 20 to 30 C. It rains frequently, but showers are short-lived.
