Drawing nearly 1 million visitors in 2010, the Montréal High Lights Festival (Montréal en Lumière) may well be the most popular festival in Canada, combining food, art, culture and lights. Its performing arts offerings traverse dance, visual arts and music. This year’s musical highlights include celebrations of the music of Jacques Brel and the Montreal premiere of singer-songwriter Coeur de Pirate.
The festival’s culinary delights will make every hog of Epicurus’ herd salivate, with its offerings of opulent wine and food pairings, thanks to the participation of top chefs and winemakers from around the world.
Arguably the most anticipated event of the festival is the eye-popping Nuit Blanche, which brings it to a rousing close. An all-night arts festival unto itself, Nuit Blanche (which takes place on February 25) morphs Montréal into an enormous, outdoor art gallery blazing with city lights. There are art installations and performance pieces dotting the squares and sidewalks. In addition, public art galleries and museums throw open their doors and welcome visitors throughout the night, most for free. If you only stay up all night once a year, this is the night to do it.
