Child-friendly diversions at airports in Alberta
Edmonton and Calgary
Edmonton International Airport
Edmonton has a whole family-friendly program called Kidzworld, the centrepiece of which are two play areas – one post-security in the north end of the Departures Lounge, and the other on the Arrivals Level in Central Hall. Children between the ages of two and 12 can let off steam by playing with the ticket counters and the plane and climbing the tower. There's seating for parents, too. This is on top of several of family-friendly features – mobile TVs, baby nurseries, family washrooms and kid-friendly restaurants.
Calgary International Airport
Spaceport is a free, space-themed educational and entertainment facility (mezzanine level of the pre-security Banff Hall area) featuring a piece of moon rock and a quarter-scale prototype space shuttle (loaned by NASA). Motion-simulator rides are available at pocket-money prices. There are also three pre-security Kidsport play areas and several mini-play station areas dotted throughout the terminal.
Arcade outlets cater to older children, but for kids of all ages, an ice-cream sundae from Dairy Queen eaten while looking out at the planes will ensure that wait times pass in a flash.
