The Bay of Fundy is one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world. Stretching between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the 270-kilometre long ocean bay is home to the highest tides in the world, and seeing the powerful tide changes for yourself is definitely something to add to your Canadian bucket list.

During one tide cycle 160 billion tonnes of seawater flows in and out of the Bay of Fundy. This phenomenon is incredible to see and there are roughly two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours. Visitors should keep in mind that if they want to see both high and low tide in one day, the time between a high and low tie is just over six hours. You can check out this page for more detailed information about Bay of Fundy tide times in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

In terms of getting around, especially if you want to travel to different areas within the Bay of Fundy area, your best bet is taking a ferry. There are small car ferries that link the Bay of Fundy mainland to various islands, and the Fundy Ferry can be taken between Saint John, New Brunswick and Digby, Nova Scotia.

When you’re not watching the tides, there are many things to do along the Bay of Fundy including hiking, whale watching, exploring UNESCO sites and provincial parks, and visiting museums and historical sites. Wine-lovers take note: The Bay of Fundy is emerging as Canada’s newest wine region with many new fruit and grape wineries being established. There are eight wineries in total in the region and two to visit include Domaine de Grand Pre, a grape winery; and Waterside Winery, which makes blueberry wine.

Visitors have a broad range of accommodation options, from country inns and historic bed and breakfasts, to cottages and hotels. You can see a list of recommended accommodation here to get a better sense of your options.

Food in the area is also excellent, in particular the fresh seafood like scallops, mussels, and lobster. Don’t leave without pairing at least a few meals with the Bay of Fundy’s award-winning wines, especially if you’ve had a chance to tour a winery or two.
