When to fly to Morocco

Peak Season:
Morocco enjoys warm temperatures year-round. The hottest months are the summer, July and August can be uncomfortable in the big cities. There is some rain between November and March, but the weather varies according to where you visit. Temperatures are generally higher in the south and in the desert area. In the mountainous regions of the country, it is cooler.

Many travellers book flights to Morocco to enjoy one of the many festivals, which take place year round. In February the almond tree blossom festival takes place in Tafraoute. May has a number of public holidays including Eid El-Mawlid, a privilege holiday for the Queen’s Birthday and the late May bank holiday.

Off Season:
Away from the coast, the summer months may be unbearably hot for many travellers.

The exotic African country of Morocco is a popular destination with travellers searching for a bit of spice on vacation. Slightly more accessible to the Western traveller than many other countries in Africa, this is still a destination that feels a world away from home. Most flights to Morocco arrive in Marrakech, in whose bustling souks you can haggle for anything under the sun.The Djemma el-Fna is the central square and the heartbeat of the city. This is the place to see snake charmers and water pedlars and listen to story tellers weave their spells. 

Fez is the religious capital of the country. Walk through the city’s preserved medieval labyrinth of alleys and streets, or sip mint tea at a table outdoors in a local café. Essouira, popular with artists and hippies and a favourite of Jimi Hendrix, boasts whitewashed riads, set against blue skies and blue seas. Further south, Agadir is awash with modern resorts, popular with package tourists. Inland is the spectacular Sahara desert where adventurous vacationers can take camel rides across the dunes or sleep out under the stars in Erg Chebbi.

Morocco climate

Morocco’s climate has extreme temperatures in the inland areas, but cooler, more pleasant temperatures closer to the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Marrakesh temperatures average 21 C in the winter and 38 C in the summer. The Atlas Mountains have snow nearly all year round, and temperatures sometimes fall below -17 C. During the winter, the north is wet and rainy, but the south is dry and very cold as it approaches the Moroccan Sahara. 

Getting around Morocco

The country is not overly large, but internal flights are readily available from Royal Air Maroc. There is a limited train network, but fares are reasonable. Shared taxis – which can carry up to six passengers – are a popular and cheap method of getting around. The bus system is regular and cheap with a good network. Ferries operate from Algeciras to Tangier and from Sete in France to Tangier. There are also services between Gibraltar and Tangier.

What is good to know if travelling to Morocco?

• Marrakech is known as the “red city” for the colour of its buildings. This is the arrival point for most flights to Morocco and almost all travellers pass through here. As well as the famous squares and souks, there is a host of other attractions for tourists to visit. There are a number of museums within the old city and the Majorelle Gardens are a beautiful, cool stop in which to relax and unwind.
• The Atlantic Coast of Morocco takes in the towns of Essaouira, very popular with wind surfers as well as sun worshippers, and Agadir, where the kasbah offers fantastic views over the town.
• Fez medina dates from the 8th century. One of the most famous locations is the tanners’ quarter with giant vats of dye and the accompanying smell of curing skins.
• Rabat is the capital of Morocco and it sits on the Atlantic. Tourist must-sees include the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Hassan Tower and Andalusian gardens, popular with the women of Rabat. Nearby, see the Necropolis of Chellah, the medieval ruins.
