Majestic peaks, vast forests, abundant wildlife and, during ski season, powder that's knee-deep. For skiers and snowboarders it doesn’t get much better than this.

This hamlet in Banff National Park lies at 1,540 metres. It's just 50km or so from the town of Banff along the Trans-Canada Highway. There are more than 4,000 skiable acres and almost 140 named runs, making Lake Louise one of North America's largest ski areas.

One of the best things about this ski resort is its layout. Families and groups of mixed ability taking cheap flights to Lake Louise will be able to ski together. From every chair there are beginner, intermediate and expert runs. This year-round wonderland offers it all - downhill skiing and snowboarding and several mountain trails.

The lake itself, sparkling turquoise green water against the Victoria Glacier, is one of the most photographed and beloved scenes in the Canadian Rockies.

Lake Louise insider information

• The first run of the season is down the Wiwaxy run, with a vertical drop of 441 metres.
• The Ice Magic Festival takes place at the end of January at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Professional carvers create elaborate, sparkling sculptures from blocks of ice. Twelve teams of three carvers are given 15 blocks of ice (weighing 136kg each) and three days to create world-class ice sculptures. The finished works of art are on display until March.
• Hike the Saddleback/Fairview trail, the highest in the Canadian Rockies. The trail starts near the canoe house on Lake Louise to a scenic tree-studded pass and down through Sheol Valley to Paradise Valley, returning to Lake Louise by a forested trail. The circuit takes about six hours.
