Despite being one of the smallest nations in the region, Belize more than holds its own in the beauty stakes with its larger and better-known neighbours Mexico and Guatemala. And while it may have once been a place only particularly adventurous travellers would consider visiting, this jewel on the Caribbean now appeals to everyone from scuba divers and ecotourists to honeymooners and families.

The Belize Barrier Reef is a diverse ecosystem that is the second-longest of its kind in the world so it is no surprise that it draws divers from the world over. It is also a Unesco World Heritage Site ensuring that it remains as pristine an attraction as it is now. Visitors arriving on cheap flights to Belize will also have their pick of caves to tour. These are scattered throughout the country, but the biggest draw is Actun Tunichil Muknal which features amazing limestone formations and remnants of the ancient Mayan culture.  Ruins dating as far back as 1500BC can be seen at a number of sites including Caracol, in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, and Altun Ha in the north of the country.
